Are We There Yet? (Week 5)
Psalm 23 (Part 5) 7/12/20
Psalm 23 1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
If you have ever taken a road trip, you have probably heard these four words.
ARE WE THERE YET? During this time of uncertainty and waiting, many want this season to be over. Studying Psalm 23 can encourage our souls knowing that God with us in the journey to the destination. There is purpose in the trip.
Verse 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death… Cf. Hebrews 9:27; Romans 5:12-14
…I will fear no evil, for you are with me… Cf. John 10:10; Revelation 1:18
Just because Jesus is with you in the journey, does not mean that the thief will not come.
…your rod and your staff, they comfort me. A rod and a staff are used by shepherds to tend his flock. A rod was used to fight off wild animals and to count the sheep and direct them. The staff was to pull the sheep back to the fold and keep the sheep moving in the right direction.
Romans 5:1-5 1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame (NKJV - Now hope does not disappoint), because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
