Are We There Yet? (Week 4)
Are We There Yet?: Psalm 23:3
“…He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.”
Our Problem: we need God’s guidance
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way. Isaiah 53:6
• Why? Our Common Ancestor: Adam
12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. Romans 5:12,14
• Why? Adam’s desires are our desires
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. 1 John 2:15-17
•What are the desires of the flesh?
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are zled by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:16-21
•The Conclusion: We need to be lead.
12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death. Proverbs 14:12; 16:25
God’s Solution #1: His guiding Word
• God’s word guides us in times of uncertainty
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119: 105
• God’s word guides our pursuit of righteous living
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:14-17
19 And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:19-21
God’s Solution #2: His guiding Spirit
•Jesus Promises Believers God’s Guiding Spirit
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. 18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. John 14:15-20
•Gods desires become our desires
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6 For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. 8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. Romans 8:5-8
13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. Romans 8:13-17
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. Galatians 5:16,22-26
Jesus’ Example of Walking in the Spirit and Using the Word of God: Luke 4:1-13
Follow Jesus’ guiding example 23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. 25 For what does it
Genesis 3:6 1 John 2:16 Luke 4:1-13 …the tree was good for food… The desires of the flesh Command these stones to become bread… …it was a delight to the eyes… The desires of the eyes The devil…showed him all the kingdoms of the world… …desired to make one wise… The pride of life …Son of God, throw yourself down from here… profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself? 26 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. Luke 9:23-26
God’s Glorious Name: • God invests in the guidance of His people for the sake of His Name: 1 Samuel 12:22; Ezekiel 20:9, 14, 22, 44; Matthew 10: 22; Acts 9:16; Romans 1:5; 1 John 2:12; 3 John 1:7; Revelation 2:3
Psalm 25:11 For your name’s sake, O LORD, pardon my guilt, for it is great.
Psalm 31:3 For you are my rock and my fortress; and for your name’s sake you lead me and guide me;
Psalm 79:9 Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name; deliver us, and atone for our sins, for your name’s sake!
Psalm 106:8 Yet he saved them for his name’s sake, that he might make known his mighty power.
Psalm 109:21 But you, O God my Lord, deal on my behalf for your name’s sake; because your steadfast love is good, deliver me!
Psalm 143:11 For your name’s sake, O LORD, preserve my life! In your righteousness bring my soul out of trouble!
Isaiah 48:9, 11 For my name’s sake I defer my anger, for the sake of my praise I restrain it for you, that I may not cut you off. . . . For my own sake, for my own sake, I do it, for how should my name be profaned? My glory I will not give to another.
• Prayerfully examine yourselves, and seek revelation on and help surrendering desires that rob God of glory. 2 Corinthians 13:5-9
