Livin' the Dream (Diversity)
Theme Verse: Ephesians 4:1-3 1 …walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
We all have individual dreams for our lives. But when we value what God values, we can live a bigger and better dream together.
Diversity - an assortment of different things. This is a biblical concept. It is exactly what the scriptures define the church is and should be. Cf. 1 Corinthians 12:12-13; Romans 12:4-5; Revelation 7:9-10
Big Idea: No matter who you are, you can be a part of God’s family.
Verse: Ephesians 2:18 For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father.
Ephesians 2:14-22 14 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility 15 by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, 16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. 17 And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
Church is not a building, it’s God’s people. Those people are made up all different kinds of people, with different ages, ethnicity, and backgrounds.
Mark 10:13-16 13 And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. 14 But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. 15 Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” 16 And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.
Children are just as important to the church as the established older follower of Jesus.
1 Timothy 4:12 Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.
There’s no junior Holy Spirit.
The biblical pattern is for older people to invest in younger people. We call them spiritual moms and dads. Cf. Titus 2
We will continue to build a diverse church, because all people matter to God.
