Family Matters - 1 John 3:11-24
Palm Sunday – Why?
1 John 3:11-15
(11) For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another; (12) not as Cain who was of the wicked one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous. (13) Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you. (14) We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. (15) Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
The message — “announcement,” as of something good. The Gospel message of Him who loved us, announced by His servants, is, that we our brothers and sisters in Christ, children of the same family of God. John 13:34-35; 1 John 1:1.
The world hates you – the world—of whom Cain is the representative; as Cain hated even his own brother; The world feels its bad works are criticized by your good works.
Passed form death to life – changed our state, “from the power of darkness ... translated into the kingdom of His dear Son.” Colossians 1:13
1 John 3:16-21
(16) By this we know the love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. (17) But whoever has this world's goods and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? (18) My little children let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. (19) And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him, (20) For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart and knows all things. (21) Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God.
He laid down His life - The essence of love is the gift of giving of self to others; towards those who need it, it is self-sacrifice: in Christ there was the laying down or pledging His soul as a sacrifice or ransom price – the act of delivering from sin or saving from evil. John 10:11.
Lay down our lives for the brethren - We ought to have such love for the church (brothers & sisters) that we should be willing to die for it(them), as a patriot is willing to die for his country. Colossians 3:3
In deed and in truth - Christ loved in both, and so must we love. 2 Corinthians 5:11
Our heart - Beware of self-deception. Have a good conscience. How? “God is greater than my heart” which condemns me, and “knows all things”. Galatians 2:11; Hebrews 13:21
1 John 3:22-24
(22) And whatever we ask, we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. (23) And this is His commandment, that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as He gave us commandment. (24) And he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He given to us.
Whatever we ask, we receive from Him - We can then believe that he will hear our prayers because we are keeping his commandments.
Keep His commandments – Faith in Jesus Christ, and love of the brethren; We cannot truly love one another without faith in Christ, nor can we truly believe in Him without love.
Believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ – The Gospel – “Good News” of Jesus Christ in everything we do.
He abides in us - If we bear the fruits of the Spirit in our lives it is proof that Christ dwells in us. If we are led by the Spirit, we are the sons of God. Romans 8:14
Are you ashamed of Jesus Christ? If so, He will be ashamed of you…Christ should be your Lord and Savior during the bad and good days of your life. That is TRUE LOVE from GOD!
