Family Matters - 1 John 2:15-17
1 John 2:15-17 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
• John is not writing about God’s creation (Cf. Acts 17:24) or even the people of the world Christ died for (Cf. 1 John 2:2; John 3:16). He’s warning about a worldview perspective.
Romans 12:1-2 1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Cf. John 16:11
• Desires – (Greek, epithymia) cravings or passion. o Flesh – (Greek, sarx) here it denotes the tendency of humans to fulfill natural desires in a way that is contrary to God’s will. Cf. Galatians 5:19-21 o Eyes – Cf. Proverbs 20:12; 27:20; Matthew 5:27-29
o Pride – Arrogance that causes us to brag in ourselves without thanking God. Cf. Proverbs 8:13, Cf. Isaiah 14:12-15; Luke 10:18
Ecclesiastes 3:11-14 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. 12 I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. 13 That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God. 14 I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so that people will fear him.
Enjoy the world without becoming enslaved to it.
