Family Matters - 1 John 1:5-10
1 John 1:5-10 5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. • Light – Cf. John 8:12
Walking in the light is the way recognize and address sin through following Jesus.
• No darkness at all – Cf. 1 Peter 2:22-24; Hebrews 4:15; 2 Corinthians 5:21
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. • Fellowship with one another – Cf. John 17:20-21
• Blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin – Sin separates us from fellowship with God and other relationships, but Jesus death on the cross brings reconciliation.
Cf. Isaiah 59:2; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Hebrews 4:13
Hebrews 9:22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. • Confess our sins – Cf. Psalm 32:5
2 Corinthians 7:9-10 9 As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us. 10 For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death. Cf. Psalm 51:7
Ephesians 5:8 for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light
