Fight Club (Week 1)
Ephesians 6:10-20 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. • Know your enemy – the devil.
1 Peter 5:8-9 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
Our war is not against atheist, other world religions, or with anyone who would disagree with our doctrinal statements. The war is against Satan and demonic who have taken people captive to do his will.
• Stand – (Greek, histēmi) to be firmly established
1 Corinthians 16:13 Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Cf. Joshua 1:9; 2 Corinthians 1:24; Galatians 5:1; Philippians 1:27; 4:1; 2 Thessalonians 2:15
Conflict produces Conquerors.
14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak. • Belt of Truth – In this biblical time period, a belt of a Roman soldier was a thick, weighty leather and metal band with a protective piece hanging down from the front of it. The belt also held the soldier’s sword and other weapons.
John 8:44 …He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
John 14:6 Jesus said to them, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life…”
John 17:17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
