Back to the Future (Equipping)
Equipping – expository bible teaching (covering context verse by verse) to lead others in their calling and giftedness.
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,
• The emphasis is for these leaders to equip others in the church to lead in their calling. Cf. 2 Timothy 2:1-2, Philippians 4:9
15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,
• Speaking the truth in love – we are humble teachers, Cf. Titus 3:3-5
• We are to grow up – we have teachable spirits, Cf. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
We will equip leaders to be humble teachers with a teachable spirit.
16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
• Equipping gets everyone involved in the mission of God.
The bible gives a lot of instructions of “what” to do corporately in a church gathering (giving, singing, praying, teaching, communion, baptizing), but doesn't necessarily tell us how to do church. The methodology is open to the giftedness found in the individual believers. The miracle is when each individual member comes together for the bigger vision. But, none of this works, if it’s not grounded in the right information – God’s Word.
