Mini Me (Week 2)
Luke 15: 1-32 12 And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.’ So he divided to them his livelihood. 13 And not many days after, the younger son gathered all together, journeyed to a far country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living. 14 But when he had spent all, there arose a severe famine in that land, and he began to be in want. 15 Then he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16 And he would gladly have filled his stomach with the pods that the swine ate, and no one gave him anything.17 “But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you, 19 and I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants.”
far country- The far country is not far in actual distance, but in the alienation of the heart.
Wild lifestyle/prodigal living- Sin is temporary madness. A sinful state is a vile, slavish state. The prodigal's wretched state, only dimly shadows forth the awful ruin of man by sin. Yet how few are sensible of their own state and character! Quote from MHCC. Cf. Ephesians 5:18; Titus 1:6; 1 Peter 4:4
he came to himself– until then he was beside himself, as all humans are, so long as they are without God in the world. Cf. Ecclesiastes 9:3
20 “And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight, and am no longer worthy to be called your son.’22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet. 23 And bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry; 24 for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry. 25 “Now his older son was in the field. And as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. 27 And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and because he has received him safe and sound, your father has killed the fatted calf.’28 “But he was angry and would not go in. Therefore his father came out and pleaded with him. 29 So he answered and said to his father, ‘Lo, these many years I have been serving you; I never transgressed your commandment at any time; and yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might make merry with my friends. 30 But as soon as this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with harlots, you killed the fatted calf for him.’31 “And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that I have is yours. 32 It was right that we should make merry and be glad, for your brother was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.’ ”
sinned against heaven and in your sight- His change of heart, or repentance, must be followed by confession. “This confession is uttered after the kiss of reconciliation” Cf. Ezekiel 16:63, Psalm 51:4
my son was dead and is alive again- the state of sin is a moral death, the state of salvation a moral resurrection. Cf. Ephesians 2:1-6
CHALLENGE: Are you far away from home? Living a Wild Lifestyle? If so, you can’t be a Spiritual Parent to no one! The pearl of parables! Too often we desire God’s gifts apart from Himself.
1 Corinthians 4: 14-21 14 I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I warn you. 15 For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. 16 Therefore I urge you, imitate me. 17 For this reason I have sent Timothy to you, who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every church. 18 Now some are puffed up, as though I were not coming to you. 19 But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord wills, and I will know, not the word of those who are puffed up, but the power. 20 For the kingdom of God is not in word but in power. 21 What do you want? Shall I come to you with a rod, or in love and a spirit of gentleness?
ten thousand instructors- those who conducted children to school, and who superintended their conduct out of school hours. Hence, those who had the care of children, or teachers (in general). Cf. Galatians 3:24
do not have many fathers/spiritual fathers- bringing you into a state of salvation, so that you have been born again.
begotten you through the gospel/Good News about Christ Jesus- By means of the gospel; by preaching it to you, that is, by the truth.
imitate me- from the word mimic, which, though now used only in a bad or ludicrous sense, simply signifies an imitator of another person, whether in speech, manner, habit, or otherwise. Paul calls on them to imitate him, as he claims them for his children. follow and imitate me, as I follow and imitate Christ: do not imitate them who, from their worldly chases, show themselves to be motivated with a worldly spirit. Cf. Act 26:29; 1 Corinthians 4:8-13; 1 Corinthians 4:17; 1 Corinthians 11:1; Galatians 4:12 John 10:4-5; Philippians 3:17; 1 Thessalonians 1:6; 2 Thessalonians:9; Hebrews 13:7; 1 Peter 5:3
the kingdom of God is not in word but in power- For in the kingdom of God it is not words or professions which avail, but the power of God in the heart. Cf. Romans 1:16, Romans 14:17, Romans 15:19; 1 Corinthians 2:4; 2 Corinthians 10:4-5;1 Thessalonians 1:5
INSIGHT - "Train a child in the way he should go, and even when he is old he will not turn away from it." Proverbs 22:6. Train in what? God’s way, not your own ways. Not as a schoolmaster, but as a father. Not to shame, but to warn. Not to threaten but encourage. Exposes the false. Exalts the true.
Your Testimony is your mission in life as a follower of Jesus Christ. Where did you come from and where is GOD leading you now?
