Rest (Week 2)
Work is part of the human calling. Genesis 2:15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. Ephesians 2:8-10 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. Works is not a means to identity or acceptance; it is the evidence of our faith in Jesus.
There were times Jesus said no. Mark 1:33-38 33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door. 34 Then He healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and He did not allow the demons to speak, because they knew Him. 35 Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed. 36 And Simon and those who were with Him searched for Him. 37 When they found Him, they said to Him, “Everyone is looking for You.” 38 But He said to them, “Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also, because for this purpose I have come forth.” Even though Jesus was God, He purposefully limits himself in the flesh to be like us (Cf. John 1:14; Philippians 2:7). He grew in strength and wisdom (Cf. Luke 2:52); He got hungry (Cf. Luke 4:2); He got tired (Cf. John 4:6); He wept (Cf. John 11:35); He bleed and died (Cf. John 19:30-34). SAY NO, because you’re human and limited.
John 6:26-27 26 Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. 27 Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.” Cf. Mark 6:31 SAY NO, because some people will drain you.
Luke 5:15-16 15 However, the report went around concerning Him all the more; and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by Him of their infirmities. 16 So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed. Cf. Matthew 26:36; Mark 1:35 SAY NO, to spend time with God.
Sometimes a good thing can distract from the great things God has purposed for us.
