God is going to give specific instructions to Israel to prepare themselves for cleanliness, before entering God's presence. Then we will see that Jesus offers something better. • Food (11:1-47) NO camel, pig, rabbit (Leviticus 11:4-8); NO Shellfish and fish that had fins but no scales (Leviticus 11:10-12; Cf. Deuteronomy 14:9-10); NO birds of prey, those that feed on carcasses; certain water birds; and other specified birds (Leviticus 11:13-19; Cf. Deuteronomy 14:12-18); NO other insects (Leviticus 11:20-24); NO animal with paws (Leviticus 11:27); NO creeping thing (Leviticus 11:29-31) • Jesus’ Better Covenant: Acts 10:9-16 9 The next day, as they went on their journey and drew near the city, Peter went up on the housetop to pray, about the sixth hour. 10 Then he became very hungry and wanted to eat; but while they made ready, he fell into a trance 11 and saw heaven opened and an object like a great sheet bound at the four corners, descending to him and let down to the earth. 12 In it were all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. 13 And a voice came to him, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat.” 14 But Peter said, “Not so, Lord! For I have never eaten anything common or unclean.” 15 And a voice spoke to him again the second time, “What God has cleansed you must not call common.” 16 This was done three times. And the object was taken up into heaven again. Cf. 1 Corinthians 10:31; Colossians 2:16 • Purification Following Childbirth (12:1-8) Giving birth is not sinful, but after birth a woman was labeled unclean and was not allowed to enter the tabernacle. She had to wait a period of time (Leviticus 12:2-5) and then offer a sin and burnt offering. • Jesus’ Better Covenant: John 16:21-22, 25, 33 21 A woman, when she is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again and your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you. 25 “These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; but the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about the Father. 33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” Cf. Genesis 3:15-16 • Leprosy (13:1-14:57) Leprosy is an infection caused by slow-growing bacteria, that affects the nerves, skin, eyes, and nose. Leprosy is treated as a much more serious form of uncleanness. There were many ceremonial washings with grain, sin, and burnt offerings. • Jesus’ Better Covenant: 1 Thessalonians 5:23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Cf. 1 Peter 2:24 Jesus heals leprosy (Cf. Matthew 8:2-4; 11:5; Mark 1:40-42; Luke 5:12-14) • Bodily Emissions (15:1-33) Men Emission - This can be anything from an oozing sore, runny nose, or diarrhea. He would then need to wash himself and anything he touched. Then he would bring a sin and burnt offering to the priest (Leviticus 15:13-15). Woman Discharge – menstruation (Leviticus 15:19-24) or chronic issue of blood (Leviticus 15:25-30) included washings of herself and anything she touched, being separated from others, and then bring a sin and burnt offering to the priest. • Jesus’ Better Covenant: Luke 8:43-48 43 Now a woman, having a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her livelihood on physicians and could not be healed by any, 44 came from behind and touched the border of His garment. And immediately her flow of blood stopped. 45 And Jesus said, “Who touched Me?” When all denied it, Peter and those with him said, “Master, the multitudes throng and press You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’” 46 But Jesus said, “Somebody touched Me, for I perceived power going out from Me.” 47 Now when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before Him, she declared to Him in the presence of all the people the reason she had touched Him and how she was healed immediately. 48 And He said to her, “Daughter, be of good cheer; your faith has made you well. Go in peace.” Point: Uncleanliness/Sin will separate you from the presence of God Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear. Habakkuk 1:13 You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, and cannot look on wickedness. Revelation 21:27 But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. Luke 11:39-40 39 Then the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness. 40 Foolish ones! Did not He who made the outside make the inside also? The laws regarding what is unclean in Leviticus give us hope that through Jesus working in us and through us, we can enter into the presence of God clean. Hebrews 10:22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
