Ghost Stories (Week 2)
5 “But now I go away to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
What does it look like to walk in the Spirit?
Today, we will look at the testimony of the Apostle Peter. After he receives the Holy Spirit and is commissioned (Cf. John 20:21-22; 21:15-19; Acts 1:8), there is a transformation in his life. We will look at 3 examples of the Apostle Peter, before and after the Spirit.
1. Before the Spirit, Peter has a lack a spiritual discernment.
Matthew 16:13-18, 21-23
Cf. 1 Corinthians 3:1 And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal…
After the Spirit: Galatians 2:6-10
2. Before the Spirit, Peter depends on his own strength.
Cf. Luke 22:54-62 [he denies Jesus]
After the Spirit: Acts 4:7-8, 13
3. Before the Spirit, Peter is not faithful to his calling.
After Jesus died on the cross, Peter immediately went back to fishing.
Cf. John 21:3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.”
After the Spirit: 1 Peter 4:14; 5:8-11
The Bible doesn’t tell us how the apostle Peter died. The most commonly accepted church tradition is that Peter was crucified upside-down in Rome. Tradition says that, when Peter was put to death, he requested to be crucified on an inverted cross. The reason for his request was that, because he had denied his Lord, he did not consider himself worthy to die as Jesus had.
9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. 10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
