Romans 8:26-28 (Prayer)
WHAT PRAYER IS NOT.
Using God to get whatever we want.
Cf. Philippians 4:19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
God does answer prayers, but He will not give us things that are harmful or not in His will. He supplies our needs, not always our wants.
Mindless Repetitions Cf. Matthew 6:7-8 "But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them..." EX.: (Child Word Looping) Dad can I have this, Dad can I have it, can I?
Prayer doesn't work if you don't do it.
Cf. Philippians 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;
God desires a relationship with us, but we must put in the effort to talk with Him in prayer.
WHAT PRAYER IS. Romans 8:26-27
26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
Prayer is talking with God. It doesn't have to be complicated or complex. You can come like a child. Even if you don't know what to pray, God helps us.
Cf. Matthew 18:2-3
2 Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, 3 and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.
EX.: “God is great, God is good let us thank Him for our food, by His hands we all are fed, give us Lord our daily bread." This is a humble and powerful prayer. God is great! God is good!
Cf. Luke 18:9-14 (Pharisee- prideful and Tax Collector’s prayer- humble and sincere - like a child).
But just a like child, you should mature and grow, especially in your prayer life.
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. It doesn’t mean all things are good, but God will use difficult situations for the greater good- His purpose/will.
Mature prayers should be according to His purpose and will. This means they line up with God's Word.
Cf. 1 John 5:14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
Some of the most powerful prayers prayed, are ones that have scripture backing them up. When you pray God's Word, you are holding Him to His Word, not your own...so it makes it a guarantee.
Cf. Titus 1:2 "...God, who cannot lie..."
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written:
“For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” [Cf. Psalms 44:22] 37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
We can trust that our prayers are going to heard by our loving God, who desires for us to be more than conquerors.
