Romans 8:14-25 (Sonship & Heirs-Part 2)

Romans 8:18-25

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 1)- Benefits of Sonship - Cf. Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (also see Hebrews 10:19) Even Jesus, who cried out Abba, Father…before he suffered the death of the cross. Cf. Mark 14: 36 And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”

John 16:33 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

Jesus is with us in the tribulation. He never leaves us or forsakes us. EX.: Mark 4:35-41, rest in the storm

19 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; 21 because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now. 23 Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. 24 For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance. 2) Benefits of being an Heir – the earth is cursed, because of sin. Our sin doesn’t just affect us, but everything and everyone around us. In God’s plan, there is a promise of hope… Revelation 21:1, 4 1 Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. 4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” 5 Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.”Firstfruits – Because we are children, we are also heirs, so we receive an inheritance, which is a portion. When you study scripture you see that the firstfruits is just part of the offering. It’s the best gift, but not everything. We receive a portion through salvation (spiritual/justification). (see notes from last week) Cf. 1 Corinthians 15:23-26 23 But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming. 24 Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. 25 For He must reign till He has put all enemies under His feet. 26 The last enemy that will be destroyed is death.

What is the rest of the inheritance?

Redemption of our body – this is called glorification. Cf. 2 Corinthians 4:17; Titus 2:13; 1 Corinthians 15:50-57 Hope- expectation (Greek) see Romans 5:1-5

Not only has God given us salvation that makes adopts us into His family when we accept by faith the gospel of Jesus; but He also gives us hope in knowing that we will spend eternity with Him in heaven.
