Romans 8:14-17 (Sonship & Heirs)
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear [translated to terror], but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. • Abba, Father – Aramaic word that would most closely be translated as “Daddy.” Cf. Galatians 3:26-28 26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Sons of God, by faith in Christ
• Heirs – someone who has been appointed to receive an inheritance Understanding the birthright in Old Testament – primarily the first born, Cf. Deuteronomy 21:15-17 Today Jesus is the Firstborn and rightly Heir Cf. Colossians 1:15 “… the firstborn over all creation.”; Hebrews 1:2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; Cf. Galatians 4:6-7 6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” 7 Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
Because of Jesus, we are adopted (v. 15) into the family – which makes us not only children of God, but joint-heirs.
